After his brilliant performance against Burnley on Saturday, I like many other Villa fans was looking forward to Cole playing against Crystal Palace. It was Cole who was going to create chances for the Villa Big Man, but he was substituted on 9 minutes after he picked up an injury. We need a midfielder with similar quality’s, one who won’t break down and who’s willing to come to the Villa, easier said then done, I know.
So with Cole out of the game, Benteke was going to find it hard to get anything like decent service to score the goals. But the Big Man took it upon himself to nick the ball of the ex Birmingham City defender Scott Dann Ha Ha, he then proceeded to head towards the opposition goal, and then he heavenly stroke the ball past the oncoming defenders and Palace goalie for the games only winning goal. Benteke, that was world class!!!
Apart from a few other chances for the Villa, it was pretty much backs to the wall. Something needs to be done about the Villa midfield. Their enthusiasm and endeavour is there to be seen but not to defend for almost an entire match, this puts extreme pressure on our defenders. The Villa defence should never be criticised ever again, not until the midfield can hold possession and take the fight to the opposition more than a few times in a game.
Yes we won and it feels great, but the problems are there for all to see. Playing this way doesn’t get you any fans as a manager, and it will only give us constant relegation battles year in and year out. But let’s hand it one more time to the Big Man, our only world class player who gave us a moment of wonderful skill, in a game of hard working desperate Villa defending. Well Done Lads!!! UTV
