Youri Tielemans to Manchester United and, breaking news, Morgan Rogers to Chelsea for a reported British record fee of £117 million for an English player.
The deal is expected to be completed on Monday or Tuesday after England’s third-place play-off against France in the World Cup tonight.
Lucas Digne is also reportedly set to leave Aston Villa for PSG once France’s tournament in America has come to an end. There is no further news regarding exactly when that move will be completed.
Now I’ve got that out of the way, I’ve got to admit these reports have left a bad taste in my mouth. But I also have to accept the reality of modern football and the transfer market.
If you think I’m slightly overreacting, you should have read some of the articles I wrote years ago about former Villa players who, in my opinion, left the club under a cloud.
Former players who caught my wrath included Gareth Southgate, Ugo Ehiogu and Gareth Barry, to name but a few. Man, I really tore into them. Thankfully, I’ve mellowed over the years when it comes to players leaving our club.
That doesn’t mean it doesn’t still doesn’t get to me. It still stings whenever any player wants to leave Villa, and I genuinely believe losing players of this quality could have an adverse effect on our season, but I hope I’m wrong.
Trust in Emery? Well, we’ve got no choice. Then again, perhaps he hasn’t had much choice either, given the PSR rules that continue to restrict what our club can do financially.
Aston Villa F.C. Europa League champions in 2026. Competing at the top of the Premier League for quite a while now. Regular Champions League qualifiers. And yet we still find ourselves having to sell the crown jewels.

Won a trophy last season and now a chance to change up an aging squad. Did we want to lose Tielemans and Rogers, of course not but that is football and we have a great manager who can make things gell again next season.
We have seen this before and will see it again but the club are moving in the right direction, why, because we still have the best PL manager bar non. UTV!!
Well it’s never ideal losing a decent player from the ranks, but at this point in time we are still a selling club. This will change within a couple more seasons, with more silverware, regular participation in CL etc etc. My real concern is too much player churn this summer will set us back several months…

It’s a shame to see some of our favourites leave, but I’m confident the re-investment will be good, the early signs are very promising and we’ll move onwards and upwards. The deals make sense financially, we need to make every penny work for us!
If the manager left though, I’d be in pieces!

It’s the pitfall of our success and the world we are in and it won’t stop anytime soon with SCR/Fines. Chelsea can stockpile 40+ players, yet we lose three key players in one window. But like Grealish… Duran, Diaby, Luiz, Tielemans and Rogers now, we always move on and continue to progress, so in that sense I ain’t bothered and we’ve seen that no player is too good for us and we find a way to become even better. We have alot of headroom now with wages removed and the profit margin to bring in a good few players easily.
I think it’s makes sense for us but Morgan is moving to a club that im pretty sure finished 10th and has no European football this year. Could there be a chance that arsenal suddenly come in with a slightly higher bid?
