From Glory to Gory to Watching Tottenham and Manchester United Embarrass Themselves in Europe

Last night, two of the Premier League’s major clubs, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, faced off in the Europa League final. As an Aston Villa supporter, the match offered an interesting perspective on how far we’ve come—and how much United and Spurs have struggled to keep pace in the Premier League this season.

Manchester United, once the gold standard of English football, now look like a side searching for direction. Their season has been reliably inconsistent, lacking in individual flair and without any cohesive play. Their general football often appears disjointed, and their tactical approach lacks the clarity that used to define their distant past successes.

Tottenham, meanwhile, began the campaign with some reasonable results under Ange Postecoglou, I vaguely remember. They played a decent brand of football early on that briefly reignited optimism. However, as the season progressed, they’ve looked like a football club caught between transformation and stagnation—they actually regressed into a terrible team.

Then having to watch these two sides compete for a Champions League spot last night, reminded me of how crazy football can be. United and Spurs are amongst some of the worst clubs in the league this season. They’ve been far from convincing, in fact, they’ve both been decidedly rubbish. And now Tottenham are in the Champions league, it’s so cringeworthy.

Aston Villa, however, have shown progression under Unai Emery, playing with a clear identity, resilience, and ambition. And even though we haven’t qualified for the Champions League yet, I’m expected to concede that Tottenham have had a better season than us? Sorry, I just can’t do that.

And now we go into Sunday’s match against Manchester United, needing a win and results to go our way in order to get a Champions League spot. I make us favourites. And even though they’re our biggest bogey side, I do expect us to really give them a good footballing lesson. UTV

  1. How petty and small do you need to be? Just let the Spurs fans enjoy some silverware as a club that haven’t sold it’s soul to the middle east or hedge funds like others. As a club that have been in the doldrums, experiencing relegation and working your way back up, you’d think Villa fans would understand the ebbs and flows, the ups and downs of football better than some…Absolutely classless.

    • Exactly mate. Spurs absolutely battered us at their place and deserved it even as much as cant stand Maddison. Spurs have a European trophy which is a lot more than we currently have despite have much we have improved. This author though has a habit of writing tosh on this site.

      • Then why keep reading the so-called tosh I write? Take a look at the league table—right down there at the bottom—because that’s where Tottenham and United are. It’s a farce that Spurs are in the Champions League. It would’ve been an even bigger farce if United had sneaked in too. But Spurs made it, so good luck to them.

But here’s the thing, mate—you need to lighten up. Football is about banter, having a bit of fun. So yeah, now and then I’m going to dig out the opposition. I reckon they’re big and ugly enough to handle it. And when I say ugly—Tottenham fans are the ugliest.

  2. Your a jealous wanker mate . Absolutely stuffed you at the start of the season when we had a fully fit side or did you forget that .

  3. No one cares.

We won the Europa League and are guaranteed champions league football and champions league money!

    Enjoy Thursday night football, fella!

  4. Spurs had no defence for 80% of our games take Dijk Kinate out for 3-4 months then striker midfielder at on stage 11 missing without rotaion playing twice you have had it caffine needs rotaion just look at City 4 titles when we beat them 4–0 with Davies Dragusin and we beat Villa with Dragusin Romero 4-1

  5. Ha! Villa last won a trophy in black and white mate. And got destroyed the only time this season they played against a spurs first team. Losers!

  6. We don’t give a monkey’s what you think. You’ve finished in the top 4 once in 30 odd years and you think you can talk bollocks about us. Remind me when was the last time the mighty Villa won anything… oh yeah 1996 😂😂😂

  7. More shots on target than Arsenal vs Chelsea FA Cup final, Chelsea vs Utd Champions League final & 1999 Utd Champions League final .. Finals always a cagey affair just another bitter trying to throw shade …

  8. Embarrassing you say. Your club hasn’t won anything since 1996, which for some reason you’re given a pass for, been relegated and spent time in the championship, criticising other clubs, you’ve had a couple of good seasons that’s all. I’d sit this one out, just makes you look like a bitter vile.

  9. What a twat, when you actually win something then you can shout out! Your winning streak was worse than ours but as we are considered a big club it’s highlighted more…. small club fan mentality!

  10. So hang on a minute….are you saying that winning a European tournament is an easy feat? Any tournament for that matter? Tournament prizes are just that, we’re you mad when fulham qualified in 2019/20 for europa qualifiers, how about leeds in 20/21, the were both in EFL then. Every team knew what the end prize was, they won it, it’s that simple. So be quiet you bitter that

  11. God what a night for Spurs, hungover going into work this morning great feeling. I’ll toast a drink to you Sunday when you realize that you’re not playing champions league and we are!!

  12. Jealous, bitter bollocks from a small club getting gobby because they’ve managed half of a good season for the first time in decades, bellend.

  13. We will let you know how the champions league feels next year. Enjoy the europa, We did, along with the justified rewards that comes with winning it brings.
