The Oscar Goes To, Our Stevie!!!

oscarReading the Aston Villa’s club statement today was a pretty underwhelming experience for me. The first thing I thought of once I had read the club statement, was how much like an Oscar award acceptance speech it was. First you had Mr Lerner explaining how bad the club has been run for the last five years and how he plans to take a “some what further distance” roll within our football club! Really!!! I thought you already had!

Then the mic was past to Tom Fox. Listening to Fox go through his carefully crafted and utterly cheesy statement, had me almost reaching for the sick bag. As I continued to read his part of the announcement, Fox explained how he spent many hours working with Lerner to get the right man for the job of Chairman. I started to imagine the tears, the sweat and blood, the ups and downs for his quest to find our Stevie; I could almost hear that schmaltzy kind of music you only get on American TV and films.

steve-hollisAnd then the moment that we’ve all been waiting for, we got to hear from the new main man himself, Our Stevie Hollis. I don’t know if he has real power in the club, but if he does, he should start off by firing Tom Fox and the current board for their mismanagement of our football club.

And if it wasn’t bad enough that we had to read words like, organisation, business, commercial and quasi-government-organisations from Lerner and Fox, our Stevie informed us how, “the business of football, is no different to any other business,” and how, “our future success lies in building a winning culture” but with little money.

Perhaps I’ve got it all wrong and I’m being a little harsh, but there seemed to be little acknowledgement of what we need to do on the football side of things. Most fans don’t want to read the kind of words that wouldn’t be out-of-place in the boardroom, especially when we’ve waited a long time for this rare statement. But I guess they’re right (no they’re not), and it’s time for me and other fans to realise, that the business of football, is no different to any other business, sad!
