Prejudice Cost Nigel Pearson The Villa Job, Whilst Roberto Di Matteo Waits In the Wings

mattoe pearsonSo Nigel Pearson my number one choice for the Villa job has signed a three-year contract with Derby County. For many reasons, I honestly felt that Pearson could have done a good job at the Villa, but now he’s signed up with a new club, and I’m left a little deflated about that! I think there was definitely an undertone of prejudice towards him from his critics, so if the truth be known, he was on a hiding to nothing! I guess this confrontational strong-minded man was just too much for some people to accept, he was never really in the race.

So with Pearson and David Moyes out-of-the-way, I guess the job will be definitely going to Roberto Di Matteo. RDM came in from absolutely nowhere a week or so ago, and was installed as odds-on favourite to take over the Villa job. I never once thought for a minute that his name would have come into the frame, it literally took me by surprise.

I just can’t get excited about the appointment of RDM, I just think that there were better candidates out there, but one ruled himself out of the job, and another is now the manager of Derby. I wonder if Dr Xia wanted RDM from the moment he knew he was going to buy Aston Villa, or if someone advised him? Who knows? Maybe if the Dr had been advised to give David Moyes anything he wanted in the same way in which Newcastle did with Rafa Benitez, then maybe he would have taken the job.

Will RDM have the final say on which players he can bring to Aston Villa? I don’t think he will, and if he does, it will be the first time he would have had the chance to build his own side, so he’s learning on the job! Milton Keynes Dons, West Bromwich Albion, Chelsea and FC Schalke, sides he inherited, but he did achieved great things with some of these teams, and for that he does deserve a good chunk of credit.

One thing a WBA fan pointed out to me, was when things are going well for RDM, his football teams play some very good eye-catching winning football, it’s just when he finds himself in a bad run of form, he doesn’t quite know how to turn things around in a way that a Sam Allardyce or a Tony Pulis would, a plan B if you will. Hopefully RDM has learnt from these sticky patches he encountered.

Knowing that we’re already relegated, it’s going to be weird watching England this summer taking on the best in Europe! I wonder what Euro 2016 betting odds I can get for a double on England to win the tournament, and Aston Villa to be promoted back to the Premier League, 5000/1 maybe? Ha Ha Ha!!! Let’s just hope that things speed up with the take over and appointment of our new manager, we really need to get a move on, and seriously, Good Luck Roberto, you’re going to need it! UTV

    • We do not want or need somebody easy to get on with. All of our recent managers have tried to be the players’ friend – we need somebody they are scared of. Nigel Pearson is an intimidating manager – maybe not a good choice for polite company if you are hosting a cocktail party… but we are a football club which is full of French and English prima donnas who are being paid a fortune. We need somebody to hit them with a great big stick so they either perform or leave. I don’t think RDM will scare anyone into leaving or performing – we will not be able to sign lots of new players unless we offload some of current problems.
Just another thing about Pearson – it was basically his team that won the Premier League – Ranieri’s best decision was not to change a winning team.

      • Everyone is saying that it was Pearson’s team who have just won the Premiership, but everyone is forgetting that it was also his team that almost got relegated a year ago. YES he was behind them going on that great run at the end of last season to avoid the drop, but he was also responsible for the first 30 odd games of Leicester’s season last time round.
I’m not disputing their great escape, I’m simply pointing out that he MASTERMINDED them being absolutely nailed on to go down last season!!
I’m not thrilled at the thought of RDM but I am glad that Pearson has gone elsewhere. The only manager I would have been less excited about would have been Neil Warnock!! Two peas in a pod as far as I am concerned!!

  1. Prejudice could have played a part. . . . Pearson’s prejudices.
However. . . . I don’t actually think that it did. I just think that our owner saw rdm as a better bet. Time will tell but you can see why he may have come to that conclusion.
Moyes?. . . . not for me thanks. Haven’t we had enough dour Scots recently (yeah, I’m prejudiced!)

  2. pearson would have been ideal if we needed to build the team on the cheep
and by all accounts he was well respected by the foxes players too

but we have to attract players who will get us promoted first time out
im not saying pearson could not do this but he has little prem experience

de matteo has good european contacts and knows both the championship and the premiership
he probably is the best choice and he is relatively local and out of work

overall he offers more than pearson and just a bit less than moyes
he will just have to work out who is staying and start to build for next season

he will have a lot of money,,, we could raise 50 mill from players alone
and still be left with a side capable of survival in the championship
grealish traore lyden gil gestede westwood baker gardner stear sinclair bennet
    toner robinson murphy green,,,,,

so,,, a good set of young players,,,, some experience in the league
and up to 100mill for signings, loans and bosmans

this could buy us 8 to 9 big players and still have 20 mill plus for the winter transfer window

we are going to be very attractive to players if we can get some good players on board in the next month,,,

it can be done,, but i doubt we will race out of the traps with such a new team

  3. The pending appointment of RDM has put a real downer of the takeover. He will encounter the same problems as Remi Garde.
we hear daily about Xia’s plans – but his first real decision shows how ambitous he really is

  4. Pearson was indeed the man for the job. Strong minded, good organiser and Just the man to sort our mess out. RDM is not proven, he took over a skilfull footballing Wba side from Mowbray and got them up in 2nd place but then failed when in the top flight. He wont have the stomach for a scrap and will be gone by mid december. Terrible appointment.

  5. Fact is as dedicated and proper fans we MUST stand behind the manager whoever its is, 101% and REALLY be the ‘twelfth man’ in order to stand a chance of auto promotion.
As an aside I don’t want to lose Ciaran Clarke, as I can see him being another Cahill. we need to keep him, Grealish, westwood, Gil, and a couple of others. Gestede can do a job in the championship.

  6. Deep down I think we all know RDM is not the right manager for us. He is going to have a shock if he is appointed, we needed someone to be tough on the players and literally smack their heads (somebody like Pearson). RDM seems like a nice guy, but he’s a Chelsea man through and through, he was sacked by Albion, rejected by Small Heath when he applied and he has never stayed anywhere more than around about a year. I think he won’t last the season. I just hope we don’t end up in league 1.

  7. Mr Xia hasn’t even passed the relevant tests so there’s no point bitching about anyone yet, money wise no one knows his true worth either, but as fans it’s ALL out of our hands anyway
