It Was Tim Sherwood’s Decision Making That Lost Us The Match Today

agbon gabMaking accurate decisions is a vital ingredient if you’re to avoid losses in the Premiership. Two things today I believe lost us the match. It’s up to the manager who he wants to pick for the starting line up, but if someone in the starting line up isn’t producing the goods throughout the game, then you would hope that the manager would do his job and sub him, right!

Twice Gabriel Agbonlahor should have been substituted, and twice he wasn’t, why? Well, you’re going to have to ask Tim Sherwood why. Gabby had a golden opportunity to score a goal in the first half, but his lame effort didn’t trouble the Palace keeper one bit! Then balls were bouncing of him, and his passing was awful, and he still remained on the pitch, why for crying out loud!!!

Then in the second half Sherwood decides to make a substitution, and I would have bet anyone £1m that Gabby was going to be taken off! Well to my horror, Sherwood decides to take off Carlos Sanchez and then a couple of minute’s later, Palace score their first goal! Is this a coincidence? Well I don’t think it is, because as far as I’m concerned, Sanchez was having a very good match and I believe we lost something in the midfield when he came off!

Yes players win you matches, but so do managers! Tim needs to get his head around making accurate decisions and quickly, because I believe it was Sherwood who cost us a point today. You might say, well he brought on the Traore and it was his efforts that got us our first goal, well if Sherwood had taken off Gabby instead of Sanchez, we might not have even conceded a goal and could have gone on to win it!!! Who knows, I just want everyone to do their job right, and that includes the manager. UTV

  1. Plus we never looked like scoring despite our good first half showing ,we still need a natural dyed in the wool out and out goal scorer

    • See sherwood blaming amavi for the goal ???? Is it just me or can’t any one see it’s clearly guzan falt why give amavi the ball with a player so close to him donkey brain he can’t kick or throw a ball out . And for gabby I’m not going to bother everyone can see it even sherwood must not play again please, finally got his chance with ruddy and did nothing all talk this lad but do every one a favour and sit on the bench need to sign a striker or we are f:::::

      • Spot on bill
Gutless comment and decisions by sherwod
Everyone knows Gabby is a myth, has not got double figures in years

      • i completely agree with those comments it was Guzans fault as he shouldn’t have passed to amavi I would have booted it up field I like gabby but Sinclair should be in his place as he can actually score goals makes me wonder if shrrwood only keeps him on cus he’s club captain

  2. If we don’t land a proven, natural finisher before the window slams shut, then we are facing yet another fight to avoid the drop.

Gabby is a passenger, and the sooner he is no longer an automatic starter, the better.

The warning signs are there. We look as impotent up front as we were for most of last season.

  3. not taking off gabby who was the worst player on the pitch makes me question whether sherwood is good enough to be a manager in the top flight. he seems to say the right things on camera but makes stupid tactical decisions during matches . today was a prime example . he took of sanchez who was breaking up all of palaces attacks and brings on adama. it was clear to anyone with a brain that gabby should have been the player to come off. we should have won that match but sherwood and his non-existent tactics and even worse substitute choice lost us this game.
he need to sit down with ray wilkins and learn basic tactics before next weeks game or we will lose again and once again be in a relegation battle.
    vodka rant over.

  4. Yeah watching the last three games, there is deffo something missing. No goal threats, Gabby was fab a few seasons ago and while he can nurture some of the new boys there is no way he should be on for 90 mins! There is evidence that we can be a team and play decent footy, but how long is it going to be before we gel! Its alarming how quickly we have fell down the league, and to be honest I am pig sick of watching the football pundits putting us down, every week ! Its very disrespectful to us fans. I hope we get in a proven striker, before the window closes its of upmost importance, we have to have faith it will come together very quickly Tim is deffo the man who can get results, just a bit of luck and patience we will be ok

  5. Heartbreaking to see Gabby performing like he is. I remember the player who scored those goals against the blouse, who formed a partnership with Carew, who was so dangerous on the break. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEGqUwKRbmE

He’s no longer that player. It’s like watching star wars episode one after the empire strikes back, like a maccy d’s after your mum’s best roast dinner. Utterly depressing.

Thought Westwood, Sanchez, Grealish were all good in midfield, defence was great until Guzan’s howler, nice cameo by Adama. Plenty of positives despite one glaring negative.

    • If only I could retweet or do something similar with your paragraph on this website then I would !!! So I’ll simply copy and paste this bit of amazing writing by you wich sums how a lot of us feel !!!

“He’s no longer that player. It’s like watching star wars episode one after the empire strikes back, like a maccy d’s after your mum’s best roast dinner. Utterly depressing.”

      Class Class Fucking Class

  6. Why is Sinclair not playing, why hasn’t KoZak been given a chance.
Why is Westwood still taking all corners and free kicks,
What is with this 4-3-3 formation, if you play with a big target man then we should play 4-5-1.
Sherwood is getting it all wrong big time.
He is continued the losing habit

  7. Agree 100% about Agbonlahor. Why he is being picked every week is beyond me.
However, it was Jordan Amavi’s mistake that cost us a point not the fact that Sanchez was tken off.
How about praising Sherwood for bringing on Traore, because he created the goal. That lad looks like an absolute star in the making.

  8. GREAT ARTICLE.
I have been watching Daniel Johnson closely.
If you asked the Preston manager to swap him for gabby ,it would be No Chance.
His movement is great one aspect gabby not knowing his left from his right hasn’t got.
Our midfielders must be frustrated ,with lack off or no movement what so ever.
Tim he’s fooled the last 3/4 mangers ,don’t let him fool you.
Be strong, gabby is villa through and through but ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
    YES ,WE’VE HAD ENOUGH.
And taking Sanchez off and Sinclair the week before is simply baffling.
Come on Tim,I thought you had balls
    You must drop him.

  9. to all of the above comments…
totally agree with everything everyone has said…
but why cant tim see it….
bench gabby, and get a proven goalscorer…
otherwise we are in the sh +1t

  10. Blaming the young left back nationally
    How about this Tim.

Well a senior player on 65k a week should be finding the back of the net.
Yes Tim , you got the wrong man to blame.
Time after time your gabby can not put the ball away once one on one.
Wake up Tim,yes its pi,,,ing everyone off.

  11. 3 minutes to go and a point in the bag. For Christ sake goalie just hoof it up the park!
Gabbie, oh dear mate you should have learned to control a football by now. Get the hook!

  12. Agree with everyone Why not try Gabby out and Kozac in, not mad on Austin but it’s beginning to look like our only option if we are to avoid another relegation scrap. Dion Dublin said he can’t see where our goals will come from with the current team and I totally agree, no better than last season, Gabby may be a true Villan but he has to be used as a sub, wake up Tim before it’s too late again. My opinion if we can get in lescott and Austin before the window closes we will scrape through, if not ???

  13. Guzan at fault with 2nd goal – repeat of clueless distribution against Man City last season. Gabby should be one of the players classified as ‘surplus to requiremenrs’ and sign Charlie Austin urgently. Sherwood seems as clueless as Lambert on tactics and there is a worrying similarity in having bought a load of foreign players without experience of English football for loads of money.

  14. Instead of spending 2.5 mill on Lescott who is 33 why don’t we buy one of the guys who baggies are looking to replace him with for just another couple if mill and get 4 or 5 years out of them?
Don’t understand why nobody has gone for Charlie Austin is there something we don’t know about or is it simply he is after a shed load of cash?

    • Totally agree m8,why should we be buying albion cast offs.33 is too old,be ok if a free transfer, but 2.5 million,no chance.Wheres the new 0.5 million right back?still injured, dont think we will be getting a lot for what he cost, makes you wonder why he was bought. We have spent the benteke and delph money but we still have areas that are a problem as in a quality striker[not the spurs cast off adebayer]quality right back and possibly a centre back but only if senderos leaves.Apart from getting injured a lot I think senderos was solid when he actually played. So we need about 20 million from randy, which seems about right,he can take it out of the tv money instead of putting it into his back pocket. Also I think its time that steer got his chance,im sick of guzans mistakes, saturday was his fault by chucking a ball to a player that was being marked, where was his head at?Ridiculous that a premier league goaly cant kick or throw a ball out.Mind you we have suffered some appalling mistakes in the past like enkelman etc.As for sherwoods tactics!we have got rid of the last useless idiot,im hoping tims not another.Maybe ray wilkins needs to get more involved in team selections and substitutions.

  15. Gabby is no more than a squad player now, if that. Who would have thought we would sign 10 players and Gabby would still be an automatic started. We would have been leading at half time yesterday with a Charlie Austin playing for us. And what about Sako??? right under our noses and up for grabs for months but we kept bickering on about the salary he was after even though he was a free agent. As for Guzan still rolling the ball out to full backs that’s the old Lambert way isn’t it.
Long way to go I fear and a long hard winter in front of us.

  16. The reason i believe that Tim did not substitute gabby is because Gabby is a villa favorite,he has claret and blue blood running through his veins.I think Tim is waiting for the fans to turn on Gabby before he drops him and avoid being alienated himself for dropping a villa hero.
Tim Sherwood is our new manager and is undertaking his first full season as a manager in the premier league, the last thing he wants to do is have the fans on his back in the early stages of his career at villa park.
Gabby will be dropped for the next game as an automatic first eleven starter,as a result of all the criticism aimed at his decision not to substitute Gabby against Palace.
The criticism will be quickly forgot and Gabby will have to fight for a right to be a starter and rightfully so.
Tim Sherwood is potentially the best manager we have had in years, give him a chance to fulfill that potential,at this time he’s simply clever with fans feelings and it could be said he’s showing respect to them over Gabby.
I remind those that criticize Gaby to think back a while to the times when he has been our hero and give him some slack, yes he’s not deserving of his place at this time and may never be again ? i ask that the fans simply appreciate how his time at villa has been without doubt more loyal than some that could be mentioned which he deserves credit for.
This is essentially a new team,a new manager,a new setup, give it time to evolve, mistakes will be made along the way,but as long as we can see signs of improvement over previous seasons,we every reason to be optimistic.
These are solely my opinions, lets not get into the mindset of previous campaigns, lets relish our future together as the best fans a club could wish for and as one we will succeed.

    • Which Villa fan would boo Sherwood for getting rid of Agbonlahor.
I for one like many others don’t even want him on the bench, because he’s a load of sh**e. Why Kozak doesn’t get a chance is bewildering as was the substitution of Sanchez. Just maybe the Spurs fans were right about the tactical nous of Sherwood – I really hope not.

    • HERO. He’s never been mine, when you say ‘OUR’ please don’t speak for everybody else, you mean ‘YOUR’ hero.

Gabby has always looked a waste of space to me. The club pay him millions of pounds in return for 5 or 6 goals and maybe 1 assist all season. Oh yeah, don’t forget the awesome relegation battles caused by people like him NOT pulling their weight doing their job.

How long would you or any of us last at our jobs if we weren’t doing it properly? Answer is…..Not long.
Yet it’s OK for Gabby to do nothing, create nothing, miss our best chances, go missing most of the games, not make runs, he can’t cross, he can’t head, he has a crap first touch and has zero skill.

All facts but he’s branded as: ‘Loyal’ – ‘Mr Aston Villa’ – ‘Villa through and through’ – ‘King Gabby’ – ‘Villa legend’

I brand him as a ‘very limited footballer’ that would struggle in the Championship. When he eventually leaves, so does his career.

  17. Guzan is poor should have signed the burnley lad or david marshall wrong to hlame the full back and gabby should not have been given a new contract he’s been poor for the last 2 years

  18. been hearing these comments about gabby for years like he is loyal and hes one of us and claret and blue run through his vains dont make me laugh can anybody name me any team who have bid for him no you cant because there isnt none apparantly he is on 60 grand a week whos gonna pay him more than that the truth is he is still at villa because no fucker wants him sad but true

  19. Gabby – last six seasons he has averaged a goal every six games.
Shocking by Lambert, Sherwood and the Villa hierarchy to play him and pay him 3 million a season over a 4 year contract. That equates to half a million a goal on current stats, that’s Bosko Balaban territory.
    Absolutely mind boggling!

  20. Dim Tim’s bizarre selection and tactics 100% contributed to us not getting any points.

1: Bacuna is a very poor RB and a very limited goal scoring midfielder, his time wasting so early on yesterday was pathetic to see.

2: Sanchez was playing great, yet in Tim’s strange mind he hooks him off and we concede minutes later.

3: Poor use of subs in a blistering hot day in London. You have 3, use them. It needed subs at HT everyone else could see this apart from Dim Tim.

4: Gabby, Gabby, Gabby, Gabby, Gabby Agbonlahor, he doesn’t score, he doesn’t score.
Tim won’t last long here if he thinks this brain dead, stealing a living, so called footballing moron will score the goals or create the assists in this team. I’m flipping sick of seeing this guy in the team doing nothing, week in, week out. I swear the people who think he’s Mr Aston Villa and brand him a ‘legend’ only see the highlights on motd.

I cannot remember the last time I missed watching a game in a decade, Gabby’s constant NON-performance is one of the main reasons in the last 5 years as to why we have been struggling. GET RID.

  21. I have been telling my dad for years gabby is the cancer of our team . bacuda was on for zaha pace but should have been sub just after half when zaha was. subbing carlos was the reason for the 1st goal gusan the 2nd we should play a Dimond formation 1 – 2 2 – 3 3 3 – 4 4 4 4 – 1 – 1 amvmi or rudy – 2 gil or sincler or grealish or adama – 3 Sanchez Westwood gana or jordan – 4 amvmi clark mika bacuda or Hutton intill the other 1 forgot his name is back

  22. Echo everything that’s been said, gabby should be no more than an impact sub against a tired slow defence (and even then that’s if others are injured) he pops up with an important goal every couple years and people forget the fact he’s offered little inbetween. He is nothing but a hindrance at this stage. With Traore now emerging, Grealish being fit & Gil being not far off gabby shouldn’t see the 1st team at all. On a side note not huge fan of Sinclair either, think he offers not much more than gabby, has pace but can’t beat a man, doesn’t cross or get assists, on the plus side he gets into goal scoring positions so may be worth using him as a striker up with Gestede for certain games. We need a goal scorer as I can’t see Ayew getting them either, he may come good in the future but we need someone now

  23. The trouble with aston villa since lerner arrived is theres been no one making the right decisions.Since steve stride left, falkner was a major joke letting oneil spend big money on a lot of average players. When the money ran out oneil deserted like a rat from a sinking ship. The nightmare then started with low cost young players and the most useless manager ive ever seen down villa park.We move on with Sherwood and tom fox, spend money that we got from selling our best 2 players, have we improved yet,its not looking that way.We gave gabby a new contract!buy a cheap right back from spain, his instantly injured!A forward that scores 3 pre season goals, doesnt even get on the bench. We need a quality goalie,we get another Norwich goaly that wasn’t even good enough for them!We don’t seem to possess any player that can take corners or free kicks accurately,so we very rarely get goals that way, some teams rely on goals from dead ball situations, but not us.Throw ins seem to go to the other team instead of our players.Sherwood said he was getting rid of the losing mentality, seen no evidence of that yet.Lerner needs to spend about 20 million from the tv revenue instead of putting it in his back pocket.Qualty proven[not foreign]goalscorer,as in Charlie Austin, proper right back, maybe a centre back,a goaly or start to use jed steer and lets see what hes made off.he might be able to kick a ball to a villa player.Im hoping that lerners not thinking of waiting until January and access our league position etc before opening his wallet because it could be too late this season. There doesn’t appear to be any weak teams[maybe sunderland]so we need to be fit and firing by now,it was hot Saturday but I saw villa players wilting, palace players seemed ok,so we still need to get our fitness levels up and we have already played 3 games!so that’s not looking too good.Get Austin from qpr for 10 million plus gabby! Not a chance, nobody except aston villa would want him,yet he earns a new contract from us!I thought Sherwood was going to be ruthless, apparently not ruthless enough.
