Everyone Loves Lots Of New Signings, But Beware!

carefulSigning lots of new players can come with some danger, the old QPR manager Sparky, will tell you this! When Mark Hughes was in charge of QPR it seemed as if he was trying to sign every player in the entire world. And as the buying continued, the fans got more and more excited, the last thing they had on their minds was relegation! Well, at the end of the 2012-2013 season, QPR finished bottom of the Premier League and Mark Hughes was sacked.

The biggest concern for me with a lot of our new incoming players is if they can gel together quickly. I’m not exactly sure how many players QPR acquired in the season they were relegated under Hughes, but I do know it was a lot. You’ve heard the saying, evolution not revolution, well it was the revolution that got them relegated, and as good as a footballer Hughes was, his dour personality couldn’t pull it off. But he did learn from this bad experience and is doing fine with Stoke now to be fair.

For me, Tim Sherwood (signed by Tom Fox) saved us last season, it was his drive and enthusiasm that rubbed off on the players which saw us over the line, hell, if he said to me I could fly, I think I would have believed him! Sherwood couldn’t do everything though, we came up short in the FA Cup, but he did achieve his main goal to keep Aston Villa in the Premiership. Now, Sherwood gets to choose the players, and even though there are quite a few new heads walking through the Aston Villa door, we have to trust what ever it is he’s trying to do.

Aston Villa’s situation is a lot different to that of QPR’s. Unlike QPR, Villa has been an established Premier league football team since its inception, which may have helped to keep us in the top flight funnily enough. A lot of newly promoted sides from the Championship think that spending big money is the best way of staying in this league, and it can be if done right, but as we’ve seen over the years, it doesn’t always work out. Hopefully Tim can get the combination right between his spending and buying foreign, mixed with his own enthusiasm and drive to keep us in this league, and I believe he can, fingers crossed. UTV

  1. Whilst I have concerns, I firmly believe that Tim, together with Ray Wilkins will get these players to gel quickly.
We are in for some exciting stuff when the season starts, especially if he gets the best out of Ade from Spurs.

  2. it could take a couple of months before we get going and gel
but the bones of the side are there so we should be ok

  3. I’m sure that Sherwood didn’t choose all these players. The new dof from Arsenal must have been employed for a reason????

  4. I trust TS and it’s obvious from the comments from the incoming players that he’s saying something to gain their trust very quickly too. We’ve struggled for years with not having enough depth in the squad and if we assume that Tim’s not going to be throwing all of the new players into a team at the same time on day one (although that can’t be worse than some of last years performances) then I think he’s made some very intelligent purchases which give him tactical variety and the depth we’ve needed for so long. Fingers crossed!!!!

  5. Tim is re-shaping the squad with more flexibility and it seems with quality and pedigree (let’s hope). Also more options and a plan B which will be refreshing. Even more so if we get Adebayor and Jordan Veretout. Living in hope UTV
