Aston Villa Are In A Spot Of Bother

Aston Villa Training SessionDriving up to Liverpool yesterday, I had just about convinced myself that we were going to get something out of that match. Liverpool’s form lately hasn’t been the best; their manager is under extreme pressure, the fans are restless, so this was a good time for us to play them, right? Wrong!!! What we got was a poor defensive display that didn’t really flatter our players, but which invited a poor Liverpool team of late to attack us, and ultimately get the win.

I don’t think we’ve played like that this season so far; a real attempt to be a defensive negative side that attempt’s to hit them on the break, why? If there was ever a time to play attacking football against a side that were feeling sorry for themselves, it was Liverpool yesterday. But certain players didn’t make the starting line-up to make that possible (Carles Gil), and the players who were on the field of play, looked as if they were under strict orders to play in this negative way.

I’ve got to call it like I see it but I really don’t see what Sherwood see’s that Ashley Westwood brings to our football team! Other than the Baggies away from home some years ago, Westwood might as well be the invisible man for me, that’s until he takes a poorly delivered corner or a set piece. Honestly, I really can’t remember when he has had a positive effect on our side, yet some people see him as a possible England midfielder, ha ha ha!!! If your going to continue to play him Sherwood, tell him, no, order him to be more positive and forward thinking and not so bloody well defensive, will you!!!

You might not agree with me, but I think the fall guy in our midfield for Westwood’s non-existence, is Carlos Sanchez. Whenever I’ve watched him play, I don’t think he’s been as bad as what some people have suggested, in-fact, when ever he’s come off the field of play, I feel like we’ve lost that physical presence that Westwood couldn’t bring in a month of Sundays!

Lastly, driving back from Liverpool yesterday wasn’t a good one; I was disappointed, angry and worried, worried, because I believe we’re in a spot of bother!!! The very well paid management who can have a positive affect on our players and footballing philosophy, need to do something to turn our fortunes around, and quick!!! UTV

  1. Unfortunately 3-2 flattered Villa so much that people might actually think it was a close game…5-1 would have been a truer reflection of the game

  2. A thoroughly negative performance. We got exactly what we deserved. Nothing. A one-sided contest, and as has been stated earlier, the 3-2 score line is completely misleading.

The poorest Liverpool team I have seen in many years, yet they were still way superior to us.

We are indeed in a ‘spot of bother’. That is putting it politely. Things wont improve until we stop giving the ball away needlessly. We keep shooting ourselves in the foot.

Even at this relatively early stage of the season, relegation looks a very distinct possibility. As in the previous five seasons, we are a very poor side, and unfortunately we don’t have a Christian Benteke to dig us out of a hole.

  3. I really think Westwoods game is suffering because Delph has gone. The style of play last year allowed Westwood more of a free role that is not happening now. Really peed off that Clark has been sacrificed for Lescott that’s not working and with Gestede in the line up we need a quality wide man getting crosses over that doesn’t happen. This manager obviously doesn’t like Gil which may well be Sherwoods downfall in the near future. Another season of struggles and this time it may well end in tears.

  4. Strange one, at Leicester I thought we had turned a corner for the better, for 70mins at least, ok we lost, since then we have lurched towards Sherwood’s childish disappoint by ultimately playing like spoilt children. It’s actually Sherwood that wories me the most, his rather bizare comments, the best being that he actually planned to play the first half against Blues by being booed off! That’s when I got worried! The current Villa squad actually has promise but the management (Wilkins included) seem to have very little idea of bringing the best out of players, its the opposite, a player has a decent game and then is dropped or substituted. If a player only has one half of fitness then at least play him from start, why bring anyone on to perform miracle’s when it’s a lost cause (Adama to mention). Remember Sherwood’s other naive statement, “we won’t be in this position next season” (aimed at Lambert I take it, when in bottom 6 last season!). I think Sherwood is the type to walk away ‘if’ out of his depth, well, if we slip up against Stoke I think that’s bottom of the league within 5 weeks and quite possibly 6 to 9 points from safety. After the Baggies performance I turned to my lad and simply said “relegation football!”.

  5. Is Tim beginning to make excuses already, has he lost the faith. He says now he always knew it would be a fight?
I thought he told us last season we would be a totally different team this season, playing on the front foot going forward?
When he came in there was a brashness and arrogance about him I instantly admired, excuses we don’t need, leadership we do.
It’s your team Tim make it work before we lose faith with you

  6. Totally agree, especially about Sanchez, He’s better than some make out and westwood offers nothing.
We should have gone at Liverpool, especially when we went one down, as they’re vulnerable at the back and it was plain our defensive setup wasn’t working. We were lucky to come in at HT just one down.

  7. Sherwood just don’t know what he is doing he use a attaker who can only use his head then he plays a 433 what is that about villa need to go back to a 442 attacking formation get wingers to do what they should do run down the flanks and pop the ball in the box simply is it not 433just don’t work lambert kept trying it with benteke he didn’t work then and it won’t work now so sherwood change it now before it to late are u that blind or just stupid

  8. sherwood is our number one concern but number two is that useless assistant ray wilkins i am afraid mr lerner you will need to man up quicker than you did with lambert give both of them there p45 and select someone who can give the team some kind of better tactics as far as sanchez i believe sherwood will before long knocked all of his confidence out of him

  9. Buy a Striker that is lethal in the air then play a system that starves him of any service. ???
Get back to a 442 and let’s have some width to the side with quality balls in that box.
I suggest Hutton Richards Clarke Amavi.
Lescott is a yard of pace and well past his best . Mix up the midfield and let’s give Gestede a chance at least.

  10. For me there are a number of things that need to be implemented and quick! We have a good team better than last year. Problem is Sherwood needs his ears pulling. Wake up…2 up front (not Sinclair!) Grealish just behind forwards-linking the midfield…1 defensive midfielder not 2…then you tell the team to create triangles when they move so there is always an option to pass! Not to play a ball and stand still – i think it was called Give and Go! If he plays 3-4-1-2 with Amavi, Richards and Clark in Defence the midfield can be creative and he would then have options to ATTACK. Oh yes, please also tell the team to SHOOT! No shots mean no goals Tim. Ok lets hope he listens!
