Aston Villa 0-0 Newcastle United: It Could Have Been Worse

avfc vs new 3I thought we were going to win today but at least we didn’t get beat. The first half was like a chess match and I thoroughly enjoyed it! The back four looked solid all match, apart from an opening in the last minutes of the match which allowed De Jong to get a hard driven shot on target, I thought we’d blown it for a moment but Guzan made a great save, well done Guzan!

Newcastle went down to ten men but this happened in stoppage time at the end of the match, so there was no advantage there. We didn’t have a shot on target all match, so there are things to be worked on. Maybe a player or two will be brought in to help us be a more attacking threat! Don’t forget we’ve Benteke to come back soon which will give us more threat up front.

The overall mood of the Villa faithful was quite upbeat so I was quite happy that the Villa faithful didn’t get on the back of the players or manager when Newcastle were quite clearly in the ascendancy in the last 30 minutes of the match. Cissokho (my Man of the Match again) came off on 82 minutes through injury; hopefully it’s nothing too serious.

It could have been a lot worse for the Villa if the Toon Army had taken all 3 points, so, I’m not going to be despondent, we’ve just got a few things to work on. Well done to us all today for respecting the 17th minute, that was never in doubt.

Right, I’m off down the driving range to hit a few balls, I’ve got a society match on Tuesday to win, I need all the practice I can get. UTV

  1. We definitely look more solid this year with a few older pros coming in , a feel a little for lambert as towards the end of last year a lot of fans were baying for his head and if we have a poor season again no doubt the anti lambert brigade will be back again but if we have a decent or good season it will be the Keane affect seems to me either way lambert will be gone at the end of the season

  2. Still feel lambert is not up to it tactically. Newcastle weren’t great but they showed flair and were enterprising going forward. All our players, apart from Delph, lack any actual technical ability. I just watched the Chelsea game and it’s incredible just how much better their players are. I know they cost about £30 million but we seem to value determination and physical attributes over technical refinement. Agbonlahor was anonymous today yet received praise after the game for his “incredible speed”.. Yes we’ve noticed he’s quite fast. Weimann abysmal. Nzobgia tried but has lost most of the skill he had in his Wigan days. Every team seems to have at least one player capable of controlling ghe ball and moving into space/taking it past a player except us, and if lambert was serious about changing this he wouldn’t have signed an ageing, injury prone cole as an afterthought cos he was free. Everybody knows the plan isn’t really to integrate cole, more likely hell be brought on with 15 minutes to go when we are losing or it’s 0-0. Even when benteke, kozak are back, we’ll still only be a mediocre counter attacking side. What’s sad is that we actually seem to have a solid base now with the improved defense and Sanchez, yet we are doomed to play in this turgid, laboured style as long as lambert is here. We will play 433 with agbonlahor on the wings whipping in ineffectual crosses to an increasingly frustrated benteke, or kozak.

  3. Love your user name Alen Huttonovic! But I think your being a bit unfair on some of our players. Charlie boy hasn’t lost all his skill he’s been out of action for over a year we’ve got give them a little time to find his fitness.

I think it’s a little to early to be giving the team a hard time, we’re currently on 4 points 2 wins & a draw! Last year we would have lost that game but I think with some of the signings PL has made including Roy Keane went some way to us getting that draw today.

I don’t think PL has done anything wrong tactically this season so far. I thought all his subs and everything he asked his players to do came off.

I was a little worried about the fact we didn’t get any shots on target today but when ever has Gabby Weimann or any other player there contributed significantly in scoring goals apart from Benteke.

I think we should just hold back a little, it’s a little early to get negative about Villa, they need all the support they can get at the moment. I’m not going to get down yet, I’ll wait till later for that if things aren’t going to well.

    Until then, well done Villa!!!
